An Earthquake Destroys a City but Makes a Man!

Over recent months in Christchurch the City has been hit by 2 devastating earthquakes. Almost every day over this time frame aftershocks have been felt .Nerves are at breaking point and many people particularly the elderly now remain shut in their homes afraid to venture onto the streets.

There is an old saying that says “Cometh the hour,Cometh the man”Before the first devastating earthquake last year Bob Parker pictured was destined for political annihilation in the re-election for Mayor. Since then he has not only been re-elected with an overwhelming majority but is considered to be an outstanding leader in difficult circumstances. Friends of mine who live in the city can now not speak highly enough about the way he has risen to the occasion and handled tragic events with strength and sensitivity.

I wonder why some people crumble at times of crisis and others rise to meet the challenges head on. To be honest I am not sure I have the answers except to say I believe they genuinely believe they can make a difference, they take responsibility, they really care and they take one day at a time.

Ken Shelley is another man who is rising to the challenge. He leads Kings Church in Christchurch and in a recent Skype interview was I can only say “Statesman like “as he shared his response to recent events and his hopes for the future.

With men like Bob and Ken and many women I believe rising to the challenge Christchurch will emerge again and rise to rebuild. Our prayers are with those serving the city and those living with massive loss.

Yours Sincerely

Peter Brooks
